Can you imagine if the strangers on the street walked around with an open window straight into their hearts? What if, as you passed a person on the street, you could see their lives flash before your eyes--all the hurt, the pain, all the confusion, as well as the triumphs, the love, the need? What if you could see their childhood, their upbringing, their mistakes, the things they have done right? What are they passionate about? What are they afraid of? What has scarred them, why are they guarded? How have they been hurt?
As soon as you glimpse the contents of a human heart, you glimpse the divine. To see inside is to experience an emotional EXPLOSION of love, compassion, respect, pity, desire to help. Would anyone hurt someone if they could see that person's life radiating, singing?
We as human beings are largely a composite of everything that has ever happened to us. But we are ashamed of what we are, or we are afraid of what others will do to us, so we slap on this fake face to show the world. It is through looking through our fake eyes at the fake faces of others that we are able to do horrible things to each other. When we can learn to recognize these fake faces, these masks, for what they are--when we can remember there is a divine soul pulsing, throbbing, hoping, hurting, loving, aching beneath--that is when the wars and hurt will cease.
