I wrote this in my journal November 26 of last year. I was reading over this journal and decided this was blog-worthy. I hope you enjoy one of my earlier writing adventures. :)
"What great things could be accomplished by very small means? What person, weighed down by secret sorrows known by no one but God and his own heart, would not be lifted by a small smile, a word, a single helping act? How many lives would literally be saved every day by a small kindness rendered by a friend or stranger to show them they are not invisible? How many souls and bodies have perished for the want of a look, for want of this very warmth of human kindness we take so lightly in our normal association with our family and friends? In our comfort surrounded by those we love and who love us, is it not easy to forget that those poor souls exist who think that there is no one in the world who could possibly care for them?
What great things could be accomplished by very small means? Have we not been told we are the light of the world, the salt of the earth--God's very hands? Does that not give us a responsibility to look after our fellow men, to succor his wants, and to walk with him and bless his life to the best of our abilities, just as God Himself would do? Most of the answers ever received to prayer came through, not an angel or a spectacular heavenly visitation, but another human being, inspired by God to lift up a brother or sister in need. Have we not all experienced this, either as the helper or the helped? If this inspired assistance is a blessing when it happens, how much more of a blessing would it be if this inspiration were hardly needed for the profusion of kindness and loving acts regularly performed by each human being to his neighbor?
What great things could be accomplished by very small means? How many people would be truly depressed if every man simply loved his neighbor? How many gangs, drug abusers, or alcohol addicts would there be if everyone cared? Wouldn't the rate of shootings, suicides, teen pregnancies, all plummet? If everyone loved their fellow men, would anyone be truly unhappy for very long? Would anyone end up poor or uneducated, if everyone had somebody looking out for them? In short, what lasting problems could such a society have, that could not, with patience and perfect love, be fixed?
What great things could be accomplished by very small means? Though the whole world is not like that now, who is to say it cannot be? We cannot change the attitude of others, but we can certainly change our own. Perhaps if enough people try, the world will catch on. Is that not the kind of life we all dream of?
What great things will be accomplished by very small means? Who can say? Perhaps you will save a soul. Perhaps you will shape a life. Perhaps you will change the world. 'Shall we not go on in so great a cause?' Many will, around the world. There is only one question left to ask: what will you do?"
